About Rochdale

Rochdale is a large town in north west England, close to Manchester, with a population of 211,000 as of the 2011 census.

The town is mentioned as early as 1086 in the Domesday Book, the entry named as Recedham Manor’. Fast forward to 1251 and the town is important enough to have its own Royal Charter.

As with so much of the north west, Rochdale grew further in importance during the industrial Revolution, it was one of the world’s first industrialised towns and the Rochdale Canal was of prime importance.

Rochdale is the birthplace of a movement that counts more than a billion people as members! The co-operative movement began in Rochdale.

As befits a town of such size, there have been many notable people who were either bon in Rochdale or lived there. These include former Doctor Who Colin Baker, Gracie Fields and Lisa Stansfield.
